Boston Teaching Salaries: Does ABE Measure Up?

Back-to-school food for thought: a rookie teacher in the Boston Public Schools makes $46,000 a year. How does your salary measure up?

*For the purpose of comparison, the hourly salary for BPS teachers was calculated by dividing the yearly amount by 8 hours a day over a 185-day school year.

    I agree with “Anonymous.” Divided we fall. I’ve also taken a very large pay cut. I’m balancing 3 jobs to make less than I have in nearly 10 years. This is totally unsustainable, and I am seeking work outside the field of ABE. There is no future in this for me. I have over 20 years experience and am not making even what a rookie k-12 teacher makes.

    Like Esolbos, I juggle roles of coordination and teaching, and like Esolbos, I have next to no time to think as I scramble around counting outcomes etc I hope she/he is able to stay. I think I’m basically done.

    I’m an individual educator in a larger multi-service agency. I coordinate, teach, and recruit for two classes. Numbers, outcomes, emails—up to my eyes. I squeeze in professional development where I can–reading on the weekends, usually. SABES trainings–as many as I can get to.

    Today I stayed late just to—think. How are we motivating our ESOL students? Should the program set some basic policies on attendance, homework, and so on? Is it better for students to set their own guidelines? How best to motivate? How best to prepare students for working in America? Furthering their education? Advocating for their children?

    Our students look to our programs for steps forward, upward. Our work matters. For them—for this community. Teachers’ talent, energy, wisdom—our students deserve it, our communities need it.

    I’m a rookie. I so want to do this work. I have tons of questions, but so little time to answer them—or even stop to think about them. I just took a 15 percent pay cut. My lowest salary in four years. How long can I sustain this?

    The Boston Teacher’s Union fought for these salaries and benefits, and I think that as long as the ABE field is divided we will continue to be treated like “volunteers” or para-professionals. This is going to result in the field always being a second-career choice, or a good choice for single people with no dependents. With more and more young people entering the field, we need to make a future for them so we don’t lose our most talented teachers early.

    The question for the DESE is: do you think that adult learners deserve high-quality, talented teachers? or do you think we can run effective programs with “volunteers”?
