Dear Mr. Baublitz,

I am writing to urge you to settle the contract with the UNITE/HERE union representing workers at Hilton in San Francisco, and reinstate their full wages and benefits.  As a frequent Hilton customer in the past, I am shocked and outraged at Hilton’s callous treatment of its unionized workforce.  I had originally planned to attend the national COABE conference at the hotel in April, 2011.  However, because of the boycott and Hilton’s approach to its workers, I have decided not to attend and not to urge any of my colleagues to attend.

In addition, I am circulating information related to the boycott through my personal and professional networks in the region and around the country. Hundreds of people will now be evaluating whether or not they can attend the conference in good conscience.

I support the hotel workers’ right to a fair contract. Their demand for a fair workload and decent pension and benefits puts them on the front lines of the struggle for political and economic justice in this country. Income and wealth disparities in the U.S. are currently astronomical, and they come with significant social costs. Many working people must work long hours and extra jobs to make ends meet, which undermines their health, their educations, their ability to be take care of children and other family members, and their ability to participate in their community.   Even in the context of robust growth and huge increases in income, and the use of public tax dollars to support Hilton, Hilton is trying to squeeze extra dollars from its own workforce.  This is unconscionable.

Hilton’s unwillingness to settle a contract with the hotel workers makes it impossible for COABE to hold a successful conference at your hotel. Your actions do not only injure your employees who are currently working without a contract, they directly hurt COABE – a nonprofit professional organization for adult educators; and they hurt your business as well. You can be sure I will not be a customer at your hotel or at any Hilton hotel until your labor practices improve.

Sincerely,
