Federated Dorchester Neighborhood Houses in the News - March 6, 2008. __________________________________________________________________Massachusetts Nonprofits Received $2.1 Million in Verizon Foundation Grants During 2007 From TMCNet News February 18, 2008BOSTON, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A total of 190 nonprofit groups in Massachusetts received nearly $2.1 million from the Verizon Foundation in 2007, enabling the organizations to improve literacy skills, create new and diverse approaches to technology-based education, and help domestic violence victims rebuild their lives. Major grant programs include: __________________________________________________________________ In December 2007, the national Working Poor Families Project and Crittenton Women's Union produced a report entitled “ Unlocking the Doors to Higher Education and Training for Massachusetts' Working Poor Families .” They found that there is a large gap in Massachusetts between jobs with a certain set of required skills and people who have the skills to fill these jobs. If women can get the education and training they need for these jobs they will be able to get and keep jobs that pay wages that can support themselves and their families. UNLOCKING THE DOORS TO

Click here to view the entire article. ___________________________________________________________________ On November 25, 2007 a column in the Lowell Sun congratulated Senator Steven Panagiotakos for winning a Special Recognition Award from MCAE KUDOS GO to state Sen. Steven Panagiotakos, who recently received a Special Recognition Award by the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education. The award recognizes his long support of Adult Basic Education and for his keeping Adult Basic Education a legislative priority. According to Fred Abisi, director of Lowell's Adult Education Program, "Steve Panagiotakos has been a friend of Adult Basic Education throughout Massachusetts ever since his days on the Lowell School Committee." The Award was presented to the senator at MCAE's annual conference, Network 2007, held at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlboro last month.
